9 Ways to Get Yourself Ready for Summer (And It Doesn’t Involve Exercise!)

Written by contributing blogger, Daniela Forte.

I will be the first to admit, I am not a fan of the summer months, I prefer the crisp cool days of fall, when the leaves are turning and the air has that faint scent of a burning wood, that is my favorite season.

But we’re not going to talk about fall (not yet anyway!), we’re going to talk about ways to get ready for hot, sweltering summer months ahead! And I promise I am not going to tell you all to go get your beach bodies in shape, because I know I’m not.

Here are ways that will allow you embrace the warm season ahead!

Cleaning out Your Closets and Go Shopping: You probably have a summer box and a winter box of clothes, that you change every year when the seasons change. Well now is the perfect time, if you haven’t started already, to toss any old winter and summer clothes that you simply don’t wear anymore. Once you make room for new clothes, it’s a great excuse to go shopping. And don’t just toss your clothes away donate them.

Change Your Comforter: Give your winter bedspread a good wash and pack it away for the next three to four months. Get out your spring and summer comforter, change those sheets and enjoy a fresh and clean bed. There is nothing nicer than a fresh comforter and sheets to fall asleep in at night.

Sit Outside on a Warm Night: One of my favorite things to do is to sit outside on my front stoop day or night and just watch the cars go by. It’s just me my cup of coffee and the sounds of the outdoors. This is a great way to enjoy the upcoming season (or any season really!). Find your spot outside and revel in the beauty of nature or the noise of the cars going by.

More Cleaning: Ok, so more cleaning… freshen up the home with good cleaning and get your place ready for the warmer months ahead. Open some windows or turn on the air conditioner. Buy a bouquet of fresh flowers and welcome the new season ahead.

Outdoor Events: As the days get longer, the festivities are more frequent. Visit your local farmer’s market, go to a music festival or buy fried dough at your local fair. Spend time doing outdoors things you wouldn’t normally do. One year, I went kayaking for the first time and it was a blast! Find something you always wanted to do during the summer months and do it.

Make a List: Of all the excursions you want to take this summer. Whether it is a long weekend somewhere or just a day trip to a museum. Consider a staycation to enjoy the things in your own town and city (things things you always said you’d do, but haven’t). The warm weather allows for the fun trips you can’t do during the cold months.

Join a Book Club: One of my favorite things as a kid was being part of our local library’s book club. We had to read five books of our choosing and at the end we celebrated. Whether you’re joining the library’s book club or you’re getting a bunch of friends together to create your own, this is a great way to catch up on some reading for the summer.

Enjoy the summer foods: As we all know some fresh fruits and vegetables are the best during their peak seasons. Watermelon is an obvious (and delicious) one. But don’t forget to consider blackberries, apricots, cherries and mangos. Imagine making a fresh mango smoothie in the AM while you sit outside with your favorite book.

Volunteer Your Time: Is there a cause you want to take part in? This summer is the time to do it! Find various charities that you are interested in and find ways to volunteer your time. This is a great way to meet new people and put good back out into the universe.
